Workmanship additionally suffered for the same cause, and a 24-day auto workers' strike in May 1948 didn't assist either. The 'forty nine Fords suffered dealing with and noise problems stemming from the rushed design program. The '41s have been the biggest, flashiest, and heaviest Fords yet. The reason was the first all-new postwar Fords that went on sale with nice anticipation in June 1948. One exterior crew was headed by George Walker, who employed onetime GM and Raymond Loewy employee Richard Caleal to hitch designers Joe Oros and Elwood Engel. The 1942 Fords gained a decrease, wider, vertical-bar grille surmounted by rectangular parking lamps in the vestigial catwalks. Styling was evolutionary, with wider, more-built-in front fenders; a busy vertical-bar grille with tall heart section flanked by low subgrilles; bigger rear fenders; and extra-rakish coupe rooflines. The executives chosen Caleal's design, which went into production principally unchanged, except that his vertical taillights had been made horizontal and bled into the rear quarter. While Ford's total volume improved to close to 691,500, it remained about two-thirds of Chevy's, which went up much more, to slightly over one million.
